What is Red Light Therapy and How Does it Work?

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation (PBM) involves the use of specific wavelengths of natural light in the mid 600 - 800 nanometer to enhance the health and function of our cells without any harmful UV rays, excess heat, or negative effects.

Red light therapy works by increasing mitochondrial energy production inside our cells. Going back to high school biology, the cell is the most basic function unit of life. All living things come from cells, and inside our cells is the mitochondria which is known as the "powerhouse of the cell". Within every cell of our body, we have between 500 to 2,000 mitochondria whose job is to make the energy your cells need to work. The mitochondria will take in the oxygen you breathe and the food you eat to create ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), which creates cellular energy in our body.

How does Red Light Therapy Stimulate the Mitochondria?

Now knowing that the mitochondria are the star players in cellular energy production in our body, we must know how red light therapy rejuvenates our cells. The red lights have specific photons that interact within our cell's photoreceptors, this is known as cytochrome oxidase. This interaction revitalizes the mitochondria in our cells to effectively use more oxygen which in return creates more ATP (energy). Cells with more energy, perform at a much higher level. This abundance of cellular energy provides our body with healthier performance.

What are the Benefits of Using Red Light Therapy?

With over 3,000 scientific studies and clinical trials, it has been proven to show that the use of red light therapy will bring remarkable results to your health and wellness. There is a wide range of results since cellular energy is so important for our overall well-being. The remarkable results that these studies have provided will include but are not limited to:

  • Increased Energy

  • Enhanced Fat Loss

  • Enhanced Muscle Recovery

  • Decreased in Inflammation & Joint Pain

  • Improved Health in Skin

  • Increased Collagen Production

  • A Boost in Overall Mood

  • Enhanced Cognitive Function

  • Faster Wound Healing

  • Improved Hormonal Health

  • Higher Sleep Quality

My Review of Using Red Light Therapy

After purchasing my red light last year in 2023 January, from Hooga-Health (Website will be linked below), I can confidently say that my overall health has positively changed. Since using it, my most notable changes have been in my sleep and recovery. I use the red light every morning and every night for about 10 - 15 minutes each session. This brings balance to my circadian rhythm. For those of you who may be unfamiliar, our body has a natural oscillation that repeats every 24 hours(our body's way of telling us when to wake up, eat, move, and sleep). Basically what this means is that by applying the red light therapy in the morning upon awakening and before sleeping, our body will build a routine into knowing when we should be awake or when it's time to go to bed. From a recovery perspective, I have significantly felt less fatigued in my training. Since I train twice a day, my recovery has to be on point for optimal performance and red light therapy is that extra boost I need to fulfill my fitness goals!

Where to Buy A Red Light?

As previously mentioned, I can't express enough that if you're interested in purchasing a red light, I would highly recommend that you buy your red lights from Hooga-Health, bit.ly/3J9f2j1. I have done my research, and they provide very reasonable prices with a lot of options to choose from such as the size of lights you want, as well as they have their own research and learning platform.
